Let me help you support your child to grow and flourish
I work in a range of ways to help understand your child, their strengths, and their needs. This might include observations and direct work, as well as asking lots of questions to really unpick what is informing your child’s behaviour. Families, and schools, are the experts on your child and I build on your knowledge to help move things forward and develop your confidence and skills in meeting your child’s needs.
Areas of need covered:
- Learning difficulties
- Emotional and Mental Health difficulties, including self-esteem
- Communication and Interaction needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Social skills and friendships
- Attention and Concentration, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Emotional Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
- Selective Mutism
- Neurodiversity
This list is just a snapshot, so please do get in touch if you are unsure whether I can support your child and family.
How I work
I use collaborative, solution-focused approaches in all of my work. Supported by a wide range of tools to help unpick your child’s strengths and difficulties, which I tailor to best fit each case.
These include:
- Consultation
- Observations
- Personal Construct Psychology to help gain and understand children and young people’s views
- Dynamic Assessment
- Group problem solving
I am able to assess your child's learning, however, I do not carry out standardized assessments (often referred to as cognitive assessments or IQ tests) which provide percentiles, standardized scores, and age equivalents. This is because I believe that there are more effective ways of understanding a child's learning profile. I use Dynamic Assessment methods which focus on your child's capacity to learn and what teaching strategies are most effective in supporting them. This approach also provides a more rounded view of their learning profile, including emotional and behavioral factors, such as motivation and concentration.
Where I work
I can work with your child in your home, at school (where agreed by school) or online. We will make a decision together on what feels most appropriate for your child.
What I don’t do
- Diagnose – Although I can help you unpick underlying difficulties and signpost you to the right services I can’t diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) but I can help you identify strategies to help support your child if they have (or are suspected to have) this profile of strengths and difficulties.
- Tutor – I may work with your child over a period of weeks or months, but this won't be in a tutoring capacity.
- Emergency Services – I cannot provide emergency services. If you feel your child is at immediate risk of danger or serious harm to themselves or others, please contact A&E at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), or the police.
